Mentor Meetup: Hee Jin Roh—CANCELLED

September 18, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

CANCELLED

Come meet Hee Jin Roh, a South Korean artist and teacher, who creates artwork full of symbolism and allusions to her Christian faith. Her work is known for its attention to detail and profound emotional resonance.

Hee Jin Roh’s artistic journey began in her native South Korea. Early exposure to a rich cultural environment played a pivotal role in shaping her creative perspective. She earned degrees in Christian art and Christian education and a master’s degree in multi-media fine art.

Roh’s artistic style is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail and vibrant use of color. She has been creating art that explores Scripture for a long time. She sees the Bible as “a book that is too lively and full of vitality to be confined to the framework of a particular religion.” The characters of the Bible seen through her eyes have one thing in common—they transcend time and space. Scripture becomes a tool to help her think about what being human is.

Beyond her accomplishments as an artist, Hee Jin Roh also serves as an educator. Her passion for art education has led her to guide and inspire emerging artists. As a teacher, she imparts not only technical skills but also the essence of creative exploration and self-expression. Hee Jin Roh’s pieces have been exhibited in various galleries, including a solo multimedia exhibition.

From Artist Hee Jin Roh:

“In my work, the sign of courage is a fish. Inspired by my memories of a dead fish I saw in his childhood, I began to paint fish repeatedly. I actively embrace the fish—a symbol for vitality—in my work . . . .In a world full of sorrow and pain, it is telling that human beings have hope.”

“This artwork was inspired by the story of Eve and the Serpent in Genesis. Eve was swayed by the serpent’s temptation to eat fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. It was her free will and her choice. In each Christian life we live with a desire for something. I pray that that desire is a good desire. It takes courage to have good desires.”

“Numerous characters in the Bible face life with courage, in spite of failure and despair. These figures, seen through the eyes of this artist, are not sleeping in the past history. They are still alive and breathing with us.”

“A String of Desire, Connected by Hope” by Artist of the Month Hee Jin Roh won an Honorable Mention in the Visual Art Category of the 2022 Engage Art Contest.
