Artist Statement

My film takes a much more light-hearted yet insightful take on the idea of spiritual warfare. The concept revolves around the idea of demons running a “business” that sells lies. It’s as if C.S. Lewis’ book, ‘The Screwtape Letters’ collided with the T.V. show ‘The Office.’ The main plot of the film follows Quincy and Jez (the demons) on a journey to get back an old client, Todd, only to find that he has been wearing his spiritual armor and not to mention…reading the Bible (his sword of the Spirit). Quincy and Jez have to flee for their lives back to their slowly failing “business” of selling lies. The short story hits on some truths about keeping your house clean and full of the Holy Spirit, not letting the devil have a foothold with a bit of a comic twist.

I think too often we get caught up in the heaviness of spiritual battle and forget how much more powerful our Lord is. The demons literally tremble at his name! So I wanted to be unique and do something fun rather than something profoundly intense. Yes there are hard times and yes spiritual warfare can be intense, but I truly believe the Joy of the Lord is our strength and who doesn’t want to have a good laugh, it’s one of God’s greatest medicines!

How it fits into contest

My short film shows the importance of standing firm against the devil, quite literally. In my film, everything seems to go well for the demons until they come across a big influx of "clients" equipping themselves with God's spiritual armor. I mean, "try lying to a person with a helmet of Salvation," it's not easy. My film depicts spiritual warfare in a very practical sense even though it is light-heartedly portrayed. It is true that the devil can be persistent and it is very important not to give him any place in our lives. He is the father of lies and only comes to kill, steal, and destroy. He may come “friendly” or tempting, but in the end, he will ruin your life. Spiritual warfare may even look funny to the people around you, but at the end of the day, every living creature has to bow at the name of Jesus!

Quincy

Being a demon...It's been rough. Numbers have been real low from last quarter.

INT. DAY - DEVILS Meeting Room

There's a T.V. PowerPoint of the manager explaining all the business numbers.

Manny Stumbles

Lying, down. Cheating, down. Even lust, down. What's going on guys? These numbers are terrible. Can someone tell me what is happening here?

Reaction shots of seemingly confused demons.

int. day - Interview Room

Quincy is sitting on the interview chair. He holds up an armor of God costume set.

Quincy

I mean look at what we are up against (brings out an armor of God costume). Doesn't make things easy. Try lying to a person who's wearing a helmet of salvation. It sucks. (Beat) That's not a lie.

INT. DAY - Devils manager's Office

Manny comes out to call Quincy and Jez to his office then goes to sit behind his desk.

Manny Stumbles

Quincy! Jez! Could you meet me in my office? Thanks.

Manny Stumbles

Man...pff... what a month, am I right?! I mean this is the biggest downtrend of lies since Peter preached after Pentecost.

Jez

Wow that's bad.

Manny Stumbles

Yup, really bad. So... I need you guys to go out in the field and bring back a couple of our core guys.

Quincy

Oh really? like who?

Manny Stumbles

Oh you know, Todd.

INT. Evening - Devil's Office

Quincy sitting in the interview chair.

Quincy

Todd Bekker. At fourteen I then convinced him to steal a candy bar from a seven-eleven. By the age of eighteen, we could call him at any point and tell him almost anything and he would believe us.

EXT. Day - Todd's House

Todd opens the door.

todd

Hello?

Quincy

Are you Todd Becker?

TODD

Yeah that's me.

Quincy

Perfect, because we were just in the neighborhood-

Jez

We're always in the neighborhood.

Quincy

(Cont.) And wanted to check in with our favorite client.

Todd

Wait are you from Sunderson's?

Jez

Yes.

Quincy

Is that a bad thing?

TODD

You guys ruined my life.

Jez

We are really sorry about that.

Quincy

We are so sorry in fact that we would like to sign you right back up with one of our best packages-

TODD

Stop right there I am not interested.

Quincy

Excuse me.

TODD

I'm not interested.

JEZ

Are you sure?

TODD

(sarcastically) Well actually, yeah now that I’ve thought about it, I would love to renew my subscription to evil.

Jez tries to hand business papers to Todd.

Jez

Perfect, sign right here.

Quincy

Awesome.

todd

Give me a second.

Todd slams the door in front of them.

Quincy

(To Jez) Well...that went well.

Jez

Yeah, I think we sold him.

Todd violently opens the door holding a sword, threatening Quincy and Jez.

todd

Get out of my house!!!

Quincy

Dear satan! He has a sword.

Jez

Would you still like to sign?

Quincy

Wow, calm down!

todd

Get off my property, you devils!!

Quincy

Jez! Get in the car!

Jez

But he still hasn't signed!

Quincy

Who cares!!? Get in!!!

Todd

That's right run you little leaches!!! And take your lies with you!

INT. Evening - Devil's Office

Jez and Qunicy rush back into the office distraught from their close call with Todd.

Manny Stumbles

How'd the meeting with Todd go?

Quincy

Fantastic, he's back on board.

Manny Stumbles

Great! I knew I could trust you guys.

INT. EVENING - INTERVIEW ROOM

JEZ

I just don’t know why we can’t say Jesus.

A demon in the background begins to manifest, another demon with coffee walking by begins to manifest. QUINCY runs into the interview room.

QUINCY

You can’t say Jesus!

Jez begins to convulse.

CAMERA MAN

Oh Jesus!

QUINCY begins to convulse, and then the camera man.
