Artist bio

Julia O’Donnell is a mother of two sweet toddlers. All her life she dreamt of filmmaking and living out her artistic inspirations, and God had worked in her life the last few years to make that happen. She aspires to be, God-willing, a mainstream screenwriter and film director, who paints and designs on the side. Her toddlers, Willow and Sage love to create with her and watch her create, so she was excited to include them on this project! Willow is three years old, but is fierce and full of spunk. She was born ten weeks early and shocked the doctors with her determination to be just fine. She is passionate about art and her friends. Sage is two and the most hilarious little sweetie. Her laugh is infectious and enchanting. She has just begun to love coloring and her favorite coloring spots are currently the walls and the chairs....much to Mama’s chagrin.

Artist Statement

The Battle is a surrealist piece about the spiritual battle between heaven and earth. I currently have no budget and very little equipment, so I have been inspired by David Lynch’s early short films. Without knowing it, I imitated him by filming my paintings, and once I discovered that was how he started, I began learning from the way he constructs experimental stories. Each piece of this film was hand-painted by myself, or by my daughters and me, and then filmed according to the story. I prayed my way through each step and even when I did not know where it was going, the Holy Spirit kept leading me.

How it fits into contest

I have often felt like work about the spiritual battle was cheesy, like it did not really treat it like a battle. In all of my work, but especially The Battle, I speak of spiritual warfare like a real WAR. I hoped to get across the darkness and fear that the battle causes without the “armor of God” which is Jesus and faith in Him, and also the exultation and victory that comes with Him.
