Artist Statement

The artwork depicts a soldier/ Christian attempting to engage the devil while being totally unprepared. Her emotional life is in turmoil as symbolized by a belt that does not adequately cover her loins. She spends time at the computer, fantasizing about sex and falls at the devil's attack. However, when she covers her loins with the belt of truth and grabs the sword and shield, she is able to repel all of the devil's darts and remain standing

How it fits into contest

How many persons are aware of the importance of the belt in a Roman soldier's armour? It is the first piece that is mentioned in Ephesians 6. The belt not only covered a sensitive area, the loins but also, the breastplate which protects the heart was attached to it. In Proverbs 4:23 we are told "...guard your heart".( Amplified Bible).
The soldier's belt was the holder for a lot of equipment. For example, there were loops on the belt for darts, swords etc. The belt was tied in several places to stay in place so that no matter how the soldier moved about, fell down, climbed hills etc. The belt was always in place with weapons at the ready.
Because of the unavailability of the ancient Roman soldier's attire, and because our focus is on buckling up and using the sword, we will use our local soldier's attire, focusing on the belt.

Transcript / Lyrics

( Soldier sits in front of a computer watching X rated films, with sword and shield on the ground and belt loosely tied. She gets up)

Soldier: I am a soldier in the army of the Lord...I'll go out and face that devil. He is no match for me...
( The devil's dart(s) can be seen flying through the air... aimed at her loins. She stumbles and falls.)
She hears a voice from heaven:
Voice: The belt of truth covers your loins. Your loins are a symbol of your sexual/ emotional life. The belt of truth is the FIRST piece of armoury mentioned. This is no accident. So much literally ' hangs' on the security of the belt. GIRD UP THE LOINS OF YOUR MIND (1 Peter 1:13). When your loins are tightly girded your thoughts will be positively affected.
( Light breaks through as she listens to the Voice. She struggles to her feet and buckles up...)
Voice: Now that you have buckled up, your hands are free to attach the breastplate to the belt, and to grab the sword.
Soldier: ( gets up, checks her attire and grabs her sword and shield. Satan's darts fly through the air, bouncing off the shield)
Satan: You're so wicked. Look at those lustful thoughts you were having. You're DOOMED!
Soldier: ( wielding the sword). It is written...If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness...and again it is written...(1 John 1: 9)...whom the Son sets free is free indeed! (John 8: 36)
Satan: Free indeed..yea..free to take that bribe that you're being offered, because your small salary can't do, and you don't want poverty to overtake you...DO YOU?
Soldier: ( wielding the sword) It is written ( Psalm 23:1)...the Lord is my Shepherd I SHALL NOT WANT and again it is written ( Phil. 4:19)...My God shall supply ALL MY NEEDS ...
Satan: Yes...yes...TRUE...so let's worship Him together - swing those hips and purse those lips...time for kicks - LET'S WORSHIP!
Soldier: John 4: 23 “The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.”
( The devil exits...)
Soldier: Ah! Thank God I am still standing. Thank God I buckled up!!
( playing in the background in a thunderous voice ...Ephesians 6:13 “Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all, to stand.”
