Artist Statement

When you think about faith, we often think about the strong men in the bible that lead and trust God with their lives. But there's so much we don't know about the stories of these people, and as a storyteller myself, one day I started wondering about one specific person in the whole story of the bible. And that is Rivka, or Rebekah, the wife of Isaac. We learn that she was so kind and respectful with the servant of Abraham when they met at the well, that Isaac fell in love with her just by seeing her. I started asking God about her, she was from Padan Aram, and his family (like we learn with his brother Laban) did not serve God. I ask what kind of feelings and thoughts she had by marrying and living with the son of the promise, was it difficult for her to leave her past behind?
I started my research, and I found something really precious. In Israel, the jewish rabbis refer to Rivka as "a rose among thorns". Because even with all the sins, evil, injustice and idolatry nature that was around her while living in Padan Aram, she remains pure and with a kind heart, as if she was waiting for a miracle to happen and rescue her from that place. The miracle was God choosing her to be part of the genealogy of the future nation of Israel, the place where our savior Yeshuah one day will be born.
Sometimes when we do something wrong we can feel like we are not good enough to be listened to by God, but at the same time we really want him to be with us! I can imagine Rivka feeling that way, learning about God, about the real God. Seeing the devotion of her husband, the way of prayer, of helping others, all of those things so different from the way she knew others worshiped gods with evil and perverse actions. I'm sure she never participates in perversity, but I can imagine her trying to be heard, to be seen by those dead images of idols, and not receive an answer. I imagine her feeling sort of alone, in the middle of people hurting others. I can imagine her putting all her energies on being kind to others, trying to listen to that inner connection that feels like part of something bigger. And then one day a man approaches and offers her the way out of that place. In the bible you can tell that she was so ready to go with this stranger… why? Maybe she felt that the real God was with him.
The story of Rivka is not a story of incredulity, it is a story of wanting to believe with all of your heart but at the same time afraid that It will be another deception, another unanswered prayer. The story of Rivka is our story, coming from a background of sin, meeting Yeshua and being afraid of our past and how this Holy God will want us. But then, we realized he just wants our hearts, our love, that’s the best sacrifice we can give.

How it fits into contest

When Isaac married Rivka, God‘s given promise became her promise. Yireh is about faith, about leaving our past behind and following the inner prayer of our souls that desires God.
We need, as Rivka, to make a decision: Will I make the faith in God my shield? Will I really trust in his protection? Will I believe that he will provide? Will I make him my Elohim?
Taking the shield is the first step in getting the full armor, because as the verse Hebrews 11:6, NLT says: “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and Sara, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel, all of them had their faith and trust in the one and only God, YHWH Elohim, that was their shield.

“(…) Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” Ephesians 6:16-18
