Artist Statement

Visual artist, Juan Carlos Arévalo, and choreographer, Camille Hanson, combine video and dance-performance in a new audiovisual creation IMAGINE.

IMAGINE is intended as a “Dance for Peace” as the world battles war and confronts inhumane suffering in Ukraine, Yemen, Afghanistan and Syria, among others.

We believe dance is a discipline with healing and transformative power. It is not peripheral, but an art that plays an essential role in sparking conversation and igniting imagination about the world we live in and know most intimately.

Although we may not have the opportunity to directly stop the dark powers exploiting this fragile world, thoughtful and compelling artistic expression can contribute to shifting our consciousness from that of grief, anger and blame to acts of care and rigorous respect for our remarkable global community.

As artists, we hope IMAGINE may act as an activation, a transmission, an unleashing and a remembering of what we came here to do, and all that we came here to share.

How it fits into contest

As a creative process IMAGINE goes beyond the action and the image into a broader arena where scripture forms part of the artistic impulse, breaking down assumptions of ‘how and why’ art happens.

The choreographic development; performance motifs, location, and sound score were designed in deep alignment with the scripture of Ephesians, chapter 6, verses 10 – 20, and in accordance with the faith-based community of Engage Art.

The essence of the scripture of Ephesians 6:10-20 coincides with one of our central artistic intentions; to embrace the practice of performance as Sacred Activism. In essence, to cultivate a pathway for stepping aside from the traditional approach of activism by asking, What are we FOR versus what are we AGAINST? It is an inner approach. In essence, an act of worship which circles around our own awakening, and considers an open heart to be the greatest act for the world, and one of the most compelling services. We change the world by embracing our inner divinity.

Although we may not have the opportunity to directly stop the authorities and dark forces of evil exploiting this fragile world, thoughtful and compelling artistic expression can contribute to shifting our consciousness from that of grief, anger and blame to acts of care and rigorous respect for our remarkable world.

We hope IMAGINE may act as a gospel of peace shining light upon the sacred; our soul, body, and our breath; the armor of our individual and collective consciousness, and serve as an homage to a new revolution of spirit, one of freedom and glory, soon to come.

‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit.’ - Zechariah 4:6
