Artist Statement

This spoken word poetry entitled 'Rona' is a poem about the famed pandemic 'corona virus' or 'Covid 19'. The poet's intention is to stress the fact the world is viewing the sickness from a flesh and blood perspective and not spiritually.

How it fits into contest

The fact remains that Covid 19 is currently one of our biggest enemies. The world is afraid, and in chaos trying to find a cure for the pandemic. This spoken word poetry 'Rona' (a nick name the writer made up for the virus) truly captures the spiritual battle found in Ephesians 6:10-20 hands down. It specifically touches on the world's fight against (evil) unseen forces and their ignorance to this battle. The poet continuously stresses the fact that we wrestle NOT against beings like ourselves but against spiritual unseen forces of darkness. The poet also made sure to allude to the book of Exodus at the end hinting that if we don't cover ourselves under the 'blood of Jesus' (in the same way the children of Israel had to protect themselves with blood) the wrath of the plague will be upon them.

A few sections of my poem is written in Jamaican creole.

Jamaican Creole Version:
Rona

We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

We wrestle not against flesh and blood but
Against spiritual wickedness in high places
Against satanic perpetual principalities
Against the movement of demonic darkness
Against…

Rona
I see her in the spirit
Painting di clear code like a vampire she loves the cold but only the wise can crack it
I see her dancing through a colorless city in a prostitute’s red dress
Once your soul is left open she’ll annihilate your flesh
Di fools in the city are ignorant and blind
Trying to fight the plague while she covers there eyes
Like using a razor to chop down a fores
They’re using disinfectant to kill a demonic mistress

Rona, like Jezebel with her poisonous schemes
Forces you to believe that your mind must conceive to what it sees
What I see is a people that will soon disappear
Chastised to the box of fear
Stuck in a prison a breed corrupted air
Claustrophobic you cah move go anywhere
Stifled by the mask that you wear
Blinded by the truth

What unu don’t understan is dat she was ordained
A key character in the script yeah she have her own lane
We gave her the cue so receive the self blame
Remove the gas mask from you eyes bask in you bane
Cuz if you no covered under the blood
A done you dead done
Cah tick time tock a come
Exodus ago run you dung
