Artist Statement

In my reflections and mediations on these scriptures, the Holy Spirit showed me that there was no more powerful words than the words uttered in the Book of Life. I could not pen any words that would do justice to these scriptures. The bible contains the most powerful words, spoken by the most powerful One. My spoken word is the spoken words of the Apostle Paul inspired by the Holy Spirit Himself.

This piece, dubbed 'Words', is part one of a passion project that pulls two distinct genres together; words spoken and words sang. Its a hybrid creation inspired by my love for singing and speaking. In this performance, a longstanding vision came to life as there is no more powerful word than the Word of God. It takes the focus scriptures and fuses them into a dynamic spoken truth. The scriptures are presented with original ad-libs scripted to extend the listeners understanding of the Word and apply it to our current reality. 'Words' also has selected words that are sang instead of said. As a singer and performer, I have experienced the power of song and therefore incorporate it into all my spoken words. The more powerful the delivery of the words, the more powerful the impact.

How it fits into contest

Ephesians 6:10-20 gives us fierce words for a fierce battle. I had no need to search for powerful words or words that would impact because the impact and power was right in front of me. What people need to hear is the Word of God. It doesn't need colour or ad-libs, it needs hands and feet. It needs a voice. This piece of work takes the scripture and topic directly to the hearer; no hidden message, no complex plot, just the undiluted word of God. I think of it as a reminder, with an exclamation mark, to all the fighting men and women of God; A pool of encouragement to the weary christian solider; A charge to the struggling soul.

Transcript - WORDS

May the words that I’m about to say bring power and light to your life. May the words that I’m about to say pierce your very soul. These words are not my words, these words are the words of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God. Every word said, every word sang, may it sing in your heart. May the Holy Spirit bring these words to life, in your life.

Finally, my brethren, be (sang) strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. (spoken) His might. Not your might. That you might be able to endure to the end.

So put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to (sang)
stand, in the midst of my problem I will stand, in the midst of this battle I will stand, in the midst of my sorrows I will stand, (spoken) against the wiles of the enemy.

Your enemy is not your mom, your bro or any person you know.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, flesh and blood, flesh and (sang) blood, blood, blood. (spoken) See, the problem in the world is we think our enemy is who we can see, when our enemy is actually unseen.

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, are not fleshly, but are mighty to the pulling down of strongholds, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, the pulling down of spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, against the evil one who goes about seeking whom he may devour but I come to empower, so that you having done all, you may stand.

So, stand therefore. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. The wicked. The wicked one. The wicked. The wicked one. Satan. Leviathan.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
