Armor of Love

Artist Statement

I used acrylic paint.

How it fits into contest

Jesus states in Matthew 22:37- 40 that the greatest commandments are: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Because love is the greatest, that’s where I started with the choosing my subject matter to display the full armor of God. Next, I went to I Corinthians chapter 13 to find the definition of love. Verse 4 states, “4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.” The words “kind” and the phrase, “not puffed up”, automatically gave me a vision of something delicate. Yes, love is delicate. So I thought of the delicate wings of a butterfly. Armor is usually portrayed as it physically, heavy metal, I wanted to emphasize the spiritual armor instead of highlighting the strength and qualities of physical armor, because Zechariah 4:6 states, … Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”
In conclusion, this work respond to Ephesians 6: 10-20 in that the glow and fire behind the butterfly displays the first verse explored, verse 10-“being strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might”. Also, the butterfly displays the full armor on its delicate wings-illustrating that the law of love is present within the armor. I also, wanted to illuminate the last verse specified, verse 20, in which Paul states, “For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak”. This displays of how a butterfly, with all of its vivid color, flies “boldly” not concerned about being camouflaged from predators as it goes and pollinates flowers—quietly and dutifully. In other words, it flies with confidence, as if it has the full armor of God.
