Title

Joanni

Artist Statement

This piece is one of many ink portraits I have created. It is also part of a recent series in which I focus on people doing spiritual work. This piece shows Joan of Arc praying, an overtly spiritual practice. Other people in the series are shown holding vigil, reporting in war zones, and providing emergency health care. The series intends to show there are many ways to practice spiritual work.

How it fits into contest

When I read the Bible verse Ephesians 6:10-20, I think of Joan of Arc: a young woman who heard the voice of God speaking directly to her, telling her to put on armor and go to battle in His name. To see a young person fearlessly stand up, with an army behind them or quite alone, never ceases to inspire. Throughout history, artists and even musicians have attempted to capture the spirit of Joan of Arc: a beautiful young woman in armor with her mind on otherworldly thoughts. The story of Joan has an element of the supernatural to it, as Joan actually hears the voice of God speaking directly to her. This voice of guidance calls to mind the artist listening for a muse to inspire them.
