Artist bio

Reuben Horn was born in the small town of Dannevirke, New Zealand. He was born to a New Zealand-European father and a mother who immigrated from South East Asia. As a child, Reuben was fascinated with the realm of the unknown—both within our plain of existence and beyond. This fascination has remained throughout his life and has greatly influenced his motifs. Reuben has a Diploma of Visual Arts from the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT), and in 2012 graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Visual Arts. He currently resides in Auckland and is a fulltime-freelance illustrator who uses both traditional and digital mediums. His concentrated bodies of work are in black, white and greyscale. He has always been intrigued with how light and shadow interact with organic forms and textures, and the various moods he can create without the aid of color. The intrigue surrounding all things grotesque and strange continues to inspire his evolving style. Reuben is currently working on a graphic novel with his wife.

Artist Statement

There are many battles each person comes up against out in the world, but I’ve always been more intrigued by the darkness we come up against within ourselves, so this concept is what I explore in my work. This piece depicts the internal struggle each individual faces against the spiritual forces of evil. It shows a war against the desires of the flesh, toxic habitual behaviors and destructive addictions. The armoured individual is in a position of action because in order for us to overcome the flesh we must be willing to put in the work to do so. Thankfully, God has also given us the power to defeat the work of the enemy in our lives—which the apostle Paul outlined in Ephesians 6 as the armor of God.

How it fits into contest

This piece interprets Ephesians 6, and the battle between good and evil, quite literally. It shows an individual leaping into a battle against the forces of darkness while clothed in heavy armour. The image can be seen in reference to the external confrontations we encounter in the world, but I intended it to portray the inward conflict we come up against within ourselves.

Quite often we will see the medieval European armour used to portray Ephesians 6, but I’ve sourced inspiration from the traditional attire of the Roman soldier, as this is most likely what Paul would’ve been referencing in his letter.

The internal battles we face, whatever they may be, can be gruelling and affect us spiritually, emotionally, mentally and sometimes even physically. However, when someone declares war on strongholds in their life, there is freedom that comes in all these areas when making that stand.
