Artist Statement

The value of humanity does not come from our permanence, but our mortal pursuit of virtue.

As the antithesis to a common globe, my artwork portrays the familiar structure of our reality elevated by spiritual perspective, making it almost fantastical.

The precarious nature of humanity, and by extension life itself, begs the question of annihilation.

The globe looks like a "model" or toy in reference to how mortal life is a microcosm of a greater life beyond, it is temporary yet functional in it's design- reference to classroom globe this world aims to teach us of what lies beyond.

The globe is emblematic of a "model" or a toy in reference to how mortal life is nothing but a mere microcosm of a greater existence beyond; the model's inherent purpose is temporary yet functional; it is similar to a classroom globe that serves as a platform for guiding individuals towards unmarked territory.

How it fits into contest

"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one."

The human species reflects God's trait of creation, yet God does not create for the sole purpose of something existing, rather everything has a meaning. The meaning for us is to wage a war against the spirits of evil.

The front angle shot composition of the peice conveys nuetrality- communicating the objective truth of our reality, as it creates a stillness in the image that suspends humanity in a timeless battle, a battle as old as our own mortality.

The pink fire accentuates how the evils of earth are a shade lighter than that or red hell, it contrasts devil's influence as "pure evil" with the purple smoke indicating humanities corruption under the devil's influence - rather than being a pure evil it is the ashes and soot of evil that integrates into our power structures and authorities "but against the rulers..."

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."

This is represented by the globe being held on a pedestal amidst the juxtaposition of chaos and growth. The green in the art, an organic colour, is for humanity and showing growth, yet the green is overlayed with a bluish tint, that represents technological innovation and the dichotomy between man's primal and derivative nature as we immigrate Gods creation in our technology.

Humanity's created world is elevated by God's protection, as portrayed by the visual motif of the platform the globe is placed on, reminiscent of armour.

Furthermore, the globe is reflective as it mirrors the fire and smoke of evil (pink highlights on globe, purple overlay) it's true colour is synonymous of that of the universe behind it - green and blue: the organic colours of Gods creation and human innovation.

But how does this tie in with the idea of a microcosm of society? It boils down to the collective. Prayers are individual, belief in God is individual - yet a collective faith is the reason humanity will be able to prosper. And that collective faith, that war that has constantly been waged against the fire, is represented in this piece.
