Artist bio

My name is Dechia Potthast, and I have been practicing art since I was young. Both of my parents are artists so art is much of the life I know and love. When I became a believer, I believe God made me new and is still making my art new as well. God has been so good to me, and my prayer is that He will continue to reveal more of Himself to me through my art. Currently, I am finishing up my bachelors degree in hopes of becoming an art teacher. I want to inspire and encourage other artists, and hopefully teach them something new. God has really opened my eyes to see His beauty, and I hope I can capture at least a fraction of it to share with as many people as possible. Blessings to you!

Artist Statement

This piece was created while I was in school finishing up my bachelor's degree. I was taking a ceramics class, and we had an assignment to make an egg. This egg could be made into anything we wanted, but I actually wanted to keep the egg structure. The other part of the assignment is that the piece needed to touch the ground in three places. I decided to have something go through the piece and intersect within it from the bottom to the top. The first three tree branches I found fit perfectly into my piece. This piece fits into my canon of work because I want to be inspired by God to create something beautiful. The fact that everything came together so perfectly let me know that God was behind all of it.

How it fits into contest

This Work fits into the contest topic, the Spiritual Battle found in Ephesians 6:10-20 in several ways. The first is that I believe we are being made new once we declare ourselves as believers if not even before then. We are no longer the same person we were before, and once this process of being made new begins, we learn to put on God's armor to defend ourselves from the enemy. In Romans 12:2, it says "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." God is constantly renewing us, and if we are listening, we can be intentional about putting on God's armor. The second way this piece fits in is the fact it is separated in three parts which represents the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each of Holy Trinity has a new influence on us to make us new, and it not only is in our outward appearance but on the inside as well. The Father is represented by the feathered texture which to me symbolizes the wing of an eagle. The Son is represented by the cross with the heart in the center and rays coming outward. The Spirit is represented by the wind swirl pattern. Lastly, the third way this piece fits is that the clay egg is also upside down which represents the fact that we no longer conform to the ideas of this world, but instead we are a New Creation in Christ.

Credits

First I have to give credit to God for the idea. I also give credit to my Ceramics Instructor Kylee Williams at Indiana University Purdue University for the assignment instruction and assistance in the technical execution of the egg project. Also my instructor exercised care in firing and handling when the piece needed to be placed in and out of the kiln. Lastly, I give credit to my family for allowing me to finish my schooling and pursue my passion of art.
