Artist Statement

The meaning behind this work came to me in a dream when I was about 17 years old, in 2007. I was going through a very tough time in my life, my aunt had been killed by her partner, and our immigration status was in jeopardy. A version of this work got me into art school in Toronto, back in 2012, and I have now finished it, so many years later.

How it fits into contest

I have used the beginning of Ephesians 6:10-20 because in my heart it resonates with how this work started, the journey it went through, and the symbolism behind it. We aren't fighting against evils that we can touch and see, sometimes the pain is deeper than flesh and blood, and much more powerful than we may realize. At the end of the day, we can recognize these troubles and focus on the harmony of life instead, healing our souls.
