Artist Statement

It depicts the last moments of our Lord and Saviour upon the cross. He is obviously tormented yet also glorified, which is signified by His fiery halo. Perhaps the greatest mystery of the crucifixion is how suffering leads to glorification. His beautiful face discloses torment by His paleness, wrinkles, blood and somewhat dark contours. His slightly asymmetrical eyes tell of the disfigurement that he feels inside from constant pain. Such asymmetry recalls the most ancient orthodox icons that show His human and divine nature in one face. His gaze at the viewer is that of the Lamb of God carrying the sins of the world. His overall expression, together with the mouth, reveals a slight bewilderment from such pain, yet He stands firm and strong in willpower, commanding your attention with His strong glance.

The bible quotes, from the left side of the cross are Revelation 6:10, a cry of the slain saints and holy ones to God, which is answered by the quote just above the left side of the cross with Galatians 4:19 "...until Christ is formed in you". Then at the left side of His head we read Gal. 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." Followed by the famous cry in Matt. 27:46, which has been translated to hebrew in order to show the original meaning.

So can all the true followers of Christ in all ages also say with st. Paul: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me."

How it fits into contest

There is no greater way to put on The Armor of God than living with and as Christ. And to become like Him, we must also eventually say "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." Through the knowledge of the true Faith and righteous living in that Faith, we become one with Jesus Christ, and such a living gives us the greatest defence against the dark world. Ep. 6:10-20 is extremely relevant in our modern days of vanity, deceit and evil. The struggle is constant and will be here every hour until Christ returns. My painting is not only showing the struggle and suffering of our Lord, it is also depicting the tormented battle that all of those who are His must go through. His beaming rays being cast on to the left side show the struggle with the darkness behind which is always trying to creep in, it is so close to the light that it can be seen upon the rays themselves. But He has the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God on His very cross, nothing can subjugate Him and those who are His. He stands firm with willpower through all tribulations of the cross (the body/life), having Faith even when death is near, and is practising the greatest form of prayer constantly: self-sacrifice to God.
