Artist bio

My painting journey began when I was grounded once in middle school. I rummaged through my mom's stuff and found some supplies and painted an old pair of shoes. It's been one of the only constants of my life and is my version of therapy. I currently reside on the coast of North Carolina with my husband and son.

Artist Statement

When pondering on this verse and seeking how to express it, I couldn't quit thinking about how "the battle is not flesh and blood". I created this piece to bring visual to what so many of us face in the day to day. I used my husband as the subject, helping me to look behind even what I as a woman, wife, and mother may face in this battle. I chose the graffiti style to showcase the beauty and chaos that is this life.

How it fits into contest

When interpreting the scripture, I chose to go with a more literal representation with this piece. My husband and I have been in a tough season and have felt the battle lately and it feels a little like this looks. It's tough, it's gritty, and most of all it's real. Neither our battle nor our weapons we fight with are physical, yet they're very tangible, in the same way our words are. I placed a crown on his head to highlight our adoption into God's family. The feathers are representation of Psalm 91:4, "He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler". A scripture, our sword. And the arrows (fiery darts of the wicked one) represent the ways the enemy wages war on us.
