Artist Statement

Within my painting practice I utilize the world of optics and how we perceive spaces to build metaphors. Often these metaphors grapple with the broken world we live in, while pointing to the hope of redemption that is found in the truth of eternity, hope in the Savior, Jesus Christ.

How it fits into contest

This painting builds a space that both collapses and expands. The shield in the center suggests a space that exists behind it, filled with light and promise. If we are to put on the shield of righteousness, we must wear Christ. As the light of the world, I suggest that He is our shield and defense. Surrounding the shield are explosive disruptions. The space I have created is one akin to a battlefield. The space looks otherworldly; as Ephesians points out, the spiritual battle we are fighting is not a physical one.

I am the only one that worked on this painting. I listened to an Alistair Begg sermon, which helped inspire me, but this is my own original painting.
