My name is Paloma Castro Ruedaflores, Im 26 years old and I was born and raised in the border of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. I've always been fascinated by the exploring of consciousness through painting, music and conversations with brothers and sisters. After traveling with my backpack, 3 years ago I went through Panamá and Colombia, looking for inspiration. I came back home and started making my own art, and this, have me feeling more alive than ever before. I thank you, for inviting me, and other artists to participate in this beautiful experience that elevates our love and understanding.

Artist Statement

After reading the passage Ephesians 6:10-20 and listening to it on several YouTube videos, I go into introspection and also I wanted to know what other people had to say and could understand from the passage, what was their interpretation of it. I had conversations with family and friends, to go into a deeper analysis, and after a couple days of taking in all feedback and insight from many people, I started sketching; translating the symbolism into a coherent communion.
My intention is to embrace visual arts as a powerful media to bring more of the spiritual realm into our daily experience as humans. Just as an act of prayer, appreciation for art can makes us feel connected and comforted.
Thank you so much for making this project happen, I see this as a great opportunity for people to connect and feel welcomed to voice their faith through art and expression of spirituality.

How it fits into contest

Shown at the top of this piece, we have the schemes of evil; represented by multiple and obscure forms awaiting to strike.
Then in contrast, God's intervention comes directly as we open our hearts to receive it, shown with the Pentecost tongues of fire; standing for the granted power given by God to speak to every human's heart.

Once you allow the divine power to be with you, the armor is given:
The helmet of salvation, a breastplate for righteousness, the belt of truth, shoes so we be ready to spread the gospel of peace, God’s word as the sword of the Spirit, and the Shield of faith, placed on the back of the body as a symbol of complete protection.

The yellow lines (light) covering the body are placed in such way that invites the spectator to feel God’s armor and presence inherently on their skin, inviting to reflect upon the strength that is always within us.

The sitting posture felt like an organic decision, I wanted to portray the confidence one projects when armed with a sense of peace. As Sun Tzu once said:

“The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.”

Finally, there's an free and unchained world, inspired by the following passage that I considered to be appropriate for the subject:

Galatians 3:22 But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
