Artist bio

He was born in Leghorn (Tuscany) on 17 January 1992. Passionate about the arts including drawing, painting and jazz music, he studied music at the city's conservatory and obtained his academic diploma in Trumpet in 2011. Since 2012 he has been approaching the world of photography as a self-taught photographer with a Nikon D90 reflex camera. His photographic works are the result of a casual search for places, which he visits on his motorbike without ever setting a precise destination, but always trying to identify some interesting scenery for his eye to capture. His main shots are of nature and landscapes, but there are also some shots of subjects of various origins with particular attention to detail; all his artistic works can be appreciated both in colour and in black and white. He is hardly satisfied with the first shot. He goes looking for that detail that he wants to convey to himself, as he has a very intimate relationship with his photography, which is why he almost never exhibits his work publicly. The year 2022 was a turning point in his private life. From then on, he decided to make public his photographic work, which he had always kept jealously hidden. Since 2015, he has been a substitute teacher of music in state secondary schools.

Artist Statement

A mirror in front of which oneself can reflect. A question to ask yourself while looking into that mirror. A chair to sit on for a long time and think about the answer to be given to the question. These are the essential elements present in a room empty of all distractions.
The author's choice of technique is deliberately black and white in order to minimise the distractions given by a world which is too often in colour and attentive only to the superficial and the futile, always in continuous and rapid evolution, without ever granting the right amount of essentials to that inner dialogue with oneself. The light comes indirectly from outside with respect to the subjects of the work, who are therefore perceived as protected within those walls that represent the introspection of the dialogue with oneself. The external light thus takes on a secondary role, because only when we ourselves have found the answer to the question written on the mirror we will then be ready to welcome the light in all its blinding brilliance of truth. The world outside is ready to welcome us, but first we need to answer the questions about ourselves in order to be ready to interface with it. Namely "the right question is: what is the right question?". This is the primary question to be asked before being able to respond promptly to the questions that life often puts before us.

How it fits into contest

I decided to approach this contest by reading and analysing the passage from the "Letter of St Paul to the Ephesians 6:10-20", the subject of the contest. Once I understood what I personally consider to be the "hot spots" on which to focus, I read and followed several homilies commented by different priests, until I came across the catechesis of the priest Father Fabio Rosini, who at one point comments on the proposed passage by stating that "when we can not find the right answers to the questions we ask ourselves, it is probably because we are asking the wrong questions". From this last concept, I was reminded of the phrase “mi domando se ti domandi tu” (I ask myself if you ask yourself), sung more than once in the stanzas of the song “Quel Filo Che Ci Unisce” (That thread that unites us), an absolute love song, so defined by the Italian singer-songwriter “Ultimo” (Last, it is the stage name of Niccolò Moriconi) himself and which is contained in his album “Solo” (Only, produced by Ultimo Records, year 2021), a project that narrates the last two years of the Roman singer, amidst the fragility of a period of loneliness that is perfectly represented in the writing of the title track. I was inspired by the syntax of that sentence just illustrated and in this way I thought I could extend the concept contained in that sentence and freely readapt it to the context of my research; following a purely abstract and reflective path, my inspiration was created: I am asking myself reflected in the mirror if that silhouette I am observing is asking the right questions about itself. The combination of these passages I have just illustrated gave rise to the desire to capture this reflection on a snapshot, in order to encourage the observer to ask himself - through a mirror - what the right question to ask of himself might be.
