Artist bio

New Hampshire mixed media artist Kimberly J.B. Smith is known for her 2D & 3D compositions that include recycled & repurposed materials, clay and altered book substrates. Additionally, Smith has come to appreciate the auspicious benefits of the camera phone to connect with the beauty of God’s artistry. Some of these photos have become part of many of her compilations while others stand alone. The blending of traditional and nontraditional materials defines Smith’s creative process. This eclectic method comes from an appreciation for the potentiality of materials and how they can reveal a story.

Artist Statement

My mixed media assemblage is a depiction of the true and accurate provenance of the concept of wearing armor for self preservation. Each item in the tableau has been carefully curated and constructed to act in harmony with the entire piece, including a description of the purpose of each piece in the armor.
The assemblage resembles a salesman’s model. Referring to Christians as salesmen for God may seem trite. However, it’s imperative that we find ways to share God’s word to nonbelievers. The world is in a precarious place. It’s time to take this message to everyone, even if it is challenging to do. We must find a way. My way is through my art and the conversations that result from the discussions about my art.

How it fits into contest

Armor of God - Assemblage by Kimberly J.B. Smith

It’s really very simple, yet people go through their whole life trying to find meaning. They turn all sorts of frivolous pursuits into their religion. They listen to pundits who expound upon this or that and are drawn into following some false god or another. So many are tempted. So many are fooled.

Our world is full of people who are on the wrong path. Crime, drugs, fame and fortune and now seeking power through war are at the top of a long, long list. Everything can be seen as light or darkness. God or the devil. The devil is everywhere. If only people could see through the falsehoods. God is the answer!

Christianity is now seen by many as outdated and provincial. How is this so? The darkness seeps in. We need to stand strong against threats from dark influences. So easy one falls prey to that shiny object that is sin and wickedness and evil. Christ is the answer. Christ is unconcealed yet eclipsed.

Even the Armor of God has been hijacked and distorted. We are told to wear our “mirrors” and reflect back whatever threatens us. Has this happened so that someone can repackage the Armor of God to present in a secular way? Are we seeing such distortions in books and from speakers who seek money or fame? In such cases, the original Biblical source is not given.
