Artist Statement

This artwork is the culmination of 8 years of hard work and dedication to climbing. These photographs, taken around the world, picture some of the hardest problems I have overcome in the sport. Needless to say, lugging a camera up thousands of feet of cliff is not for the faint of heart. However, the pictures you have the opportunity to capture, when you're standing on a thin ledge of rock, and you're out of breath, and you smell horribly, and you've been hungry for the past six hours, make it all worthwhile.

How it fits into contest

Much like the spiritual battle found in Ephesians 6:10-20, climbing presents challenges that require perseverance, creativity, and faith to overcome. From the immediate physical challenge of going higher while your muscles fail and cramp, to the emotional struggle of being unable to pursue your aspirations due to injury, climbing provides a useful metaphor to adversity in our lives. By honing my ability to climb harder problems, delve into new styles, and push the boundaries of my mental and physical capability, I am able to simultaneously contextualize and yield perspective to analogous adversity in my life. Looking back on the past 8 years, the most challenging periods - scholastically, professionally, or emotionally - coincide perfectly with periods of intense growth in climbing. This is because it provides an outlet that demands complete focus, which allows a much-needed respite from the more important matter at hand. By pushing myself to overcome the challenge of the route, I somehow convince myself that I have what it takes to also solve the other problem. Perhaps this outlet is my armor of God.
