Artist bio

Isaac Cordova is a Latino visual artist specializing in photography, filmmaking, and art direction. After graduating SMU with a Bachelor’s in Creative Advertising, he has been a self-employed photographer and videographer in Dallas, Texas. Recipient of the NSSC Richard Patrick Photography Award as well as the Creative Award for the Texas Central Bullet Train Short Film Competition, he has also worked with clients such as IG Capital and Tilt Studios. Having lived in numerous social classes and ethnic cultures throughout his life, he now enjoys a broader perspective on topics such as culture, truth, and faith. He gravitates towards art that illuminates the parts of life that go beyond reality. He is driven by the moments in life that seem too surreal to be true. This has led him to create a short film inspired by the on-going internal struggle we all wage against sin while portraying our relationship with temptation.

Artist Statement

Taking a Stand portrays our spiritual battle of good vs evil in a relatable and modern way. After several weeks of concepting and 3 storyboards, I knew I wanted a snake to symbolize sin, temptation, and most importantly the devil's schemes. This series follows Elissa through her relationship with the serpent. In The Encounter, she is intrigued and optimistic. In Reality, she is uncomfortable and experiences remorse. In Losing Grip, she finds herself completely distraught. After a spark of bravery, she chooses God as her pillar of strength and turns to scripture to fight off the serpent. In The Confrontation, her unique bravery is the highlight. In the final photograph Triumph, it is clear to see that she is now in control of her once disarrayed situation. Taking a Stand serves to depict the nature of the devil and sin along with showing the courage and maturity needed to confide in the Lord. This means putting on His armor so we are always ready for battle. This series fits into my body of work due to the modern photographic style used to capture emotion.

How it fits into contest

Taking a Stand portrays the spiritual battle highlighted in Ephesians 6:10-20 by showing how it is an individual journey that demands great courage to win against the dark forces that seek to bring us down. It is easy to be complacent and succumb to the devil's plots, but it takes immense self love and discipline to gather the bravery to change our lives. Taking a Stand depicts the guilt we feel after being lured in by sin along with feeling deceived. Just as we reach the point of utmost turmoil and emptiness, we find it in us to equip the armor of God to win the spiritual war. Taking a Stand is about finding strength in God and confiding in His word to grant us His armor. We know this is a war the devil cannot ultimately win. The final image in this series shows how we must endure his temptation and remain steadfast on our path.
