This wood spirit is carved out of a chunk of red cedar. The grain of the wood is absolutely beautiful as it reveals itself around the flames and face. This piece was my first attempt at a larger sculpture. Carving is a process of removing layer after layer to reveal the beauty underneath. Much is the case in our own lives as we transform through our own healing and beliefs. This sculpture was carved with chisels by hand to start and finished with a Dremel tool for the smaller definitions, and lastly sanded by hand to expose the beautiful grain. This piece took me 4 years to complete as I worked on it in the small spaces of time in between raising 2 young children.

I resonated with 1 Corinthians 16:23
"Watch. Stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong".

Whether it is the fires in the forest or the fires in the mind and heart, this piece speaks to standing fast in the faith of love, represented by the heart shaped rock in the center of the piece. The wood spirit appears calm and focused on holding the space for love as the flames surround it rise.
