Artist Statement

My artwork, "Psalm 89:9 – Storm-Tossed Faith," is an acrylic painting on pine wood, capturing a majestic ship sailing defiantly through a violent storm. Rendered in vibrant blues, grays, and whites, the turbulent waves crash against the vessel's hull, while lightning cracks the sky and dark clouds swirl overhead. At the bow, a faint glow symbolizes divine calm, with the Bible verse elegantly scripted in flowing gold letters: "You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them" (Psalm 89:9, NKJV). This 12x16-inch piece evokes God's sovereignty over chaos, blending realism with spiritual symbolism on the wood's natural grain for textured depth.

Creative Process
Inspired by personal faith and Madurai's monsoon vibes, I begin with prayerful meditation on the verse, sketching the composition in my journal to balance drama and hope. Client input shapes the ship's design, evoking resilience amid life's storms.

After sanding and staining the pine for a warm base, I layer acrylics wet-on-dry: underpainting stormy seas in Prussian blue and Payne's gray, building foam with white highlights and titanium white caps. The ship emerges in burnt sienna hulls and sail details, pyrography accents adding subtle burn marks for realism. Waves get dimensional glazes for motion.

Final touches include dry-brushing foam edges and airbrushing mist. I seal with UV-protectant fixative for archival quality, ensuring vibrancy. Edited Photoshop previews confirm satisfaction before shipping. This process merges my pyrography roots with acrylic mastery, creating heirloom art.

How it fits into contest

In the chaos of life's storms—be it personal trials, global unrest, or inner turmoil—this verse anchors us in God's sovereign power. Picture the disciples' panic in Mark 4:35-41, waves swamping their boat until Jesus rebuked the winds: "Peace, be still!" Just as He calmed the literal sea, He rules every "raging" we face.

It’s important to remember that sometimes God strengthens us to endure rather than removing the storm. If you’re in a storm, remember God has never left you and promises to not forsake you. Stand strong in His strength and swim if you have to.

My name is Jeffery, and I am a pyrography artist specializing in hyper-realistic portraits. Using the intricate and timeless medium of wood burning, I create works that combine traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to evoke emotion, depth, and realism. There’s something about the act of burning wood that ignites my imagination and fuels my creativity. Inspired by the complexity of human expressions and the stories they tell, I aim to breathe life into wooden canvases through a delicate interplay of light and shadow. Each piece is a meticulous journey of preparation, precision, and patience, as I carefully control heat to achieve varying tones and textures that transform simple wood into captivating art.

My work reflects a deep appreciation for preserving the enduring beauty of pyrography while pushing its boundaries to explore new possibilities. Through my art, I strive to honor the human experience, capturing fleeting emotions and moments that resonate universally.
