Artist bio

I am a Christian artist, who paints in watercolors, acrylics, oils, inks and mixed media. As a sculptor, I've spent years studying figurative sculpture with live models, working in stoneware and terracotta. Whenever I now sculpt, I prefer to work with colorful polymer clays. The Lord has blessed the work of my hands to be in numerous private and corporate collections around the world. Together with other artists, I co-owned a gallery in Dallas for about a decade. I am currently represented by Giddens Gallery in Grapevine, Texas. I'm also an author, writer, and creator of hand-drawn devotional coloring books available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other online retailers. As an art teacher, it thrills me to engage young minds of the next generation at Cedar Hall Classical Academy to share my love for the Lord and beauty. All the good in my life is because of Jesus. I'm more passionate about Him than writing, art, design or creativity. I enjoy expressing visual praise to God for a redeemed, beautiful life.

The Word Made Flesh

Medium/Genre

Digital Art

Artist Statement

The Word Made Flesh is a digital painting created on an iPad with an Apple Pencil in an abstract, paper cut style.
Expressing deep maternal emotions are a frequent theme in my art. Familiar to me as a mother of sons, I never tire of visually exploring nuances of Mary’s role as the mother of Jesus.
In this artwork, she is filled with the newness and joys of motherhood. Thirty years of her son's growth and maturity await her, shrouded in mystery. Tasked with the responsibility of nurturing that growth, she never grasped that the fruit of her labors would culminate in His journey to the cross.
There, I imagine her watching in anguish, as her beloved son’s body is marred beyond recognition. At the cross I feel her pain as only a mother can, experiencing its horrors, without yet understanding its ramifications. Although hours were spent lovingly caring for Him while “pondering” the divine words spoken to her, their full beauty was only revealed upon His resurrection.
Biblical symbols, precious and familiar to us who believe, are tucked into the work to contemplate and explore those connections as they pertain to our own lives.
Divine words, spoken centuries before, find their fulfillment in this union—mother and son, divine and earthly, flesh and spirit, death and life—mysteries that will take a lifetime to understand and enjoy.
The pages of the greatest book on earth, the Bible, lie open as an eternal invitation to experience Jesus, the Word made flesh.

How it fits into contest
