Found is a 12”x12” mixed media and oil painting on gallery-stretched canvas. The background was created intuitively using acrylics, inks, watercolors, and coffee grounds. I painted it in a posture of worship—listening to Christian music and intentionally inviting the Holy Spirit to guide each decision. While I often begin with a sense of what the piece is meant to hold, I allow the process itself to be led by God rather than controlled by me.
As the background developed, it took on an ocean-like quality—layered, moving, and chaotic. That chaos is important to me. It reflects the brokenness and instability of the world we live in, and I don’t try to hide or resolve it. I want it to remain honest. In contrast, the pearl is painted realistically in oil. This shift is intentional and central to the meaning of the work. In my art, realism represents truth revealed through Scripture and the hope found in Christ. The pearl does not erase the chaos around it, but it stands firmly within it, unchanged.
Found is inspired by Matthew 13:45–46, the parable of the pearl of great price. This passage is often understood as a call for believers to give everything to follow Christ. While that meaning is true, I was deeply impacted by a teaching that looked at this parable in light of the surrounding ones in Matthew 13, where the central figure symbolically represents Christ. Reading the passage this way shifts the focus from us searching for God to Christ actively seeking what is precious to Him.
In this interpretation, Jesus is the one who goes out looking for fine pearls. When He finds one of great value, He gives up everything to obtain it. That understanding changed how I read this passage. Christ was not waiting to be discovered—He was searching. And what He was searching for were “fine pearls.” This helped me grasp, in a personal way, how deeply valued we are to Him. He found me. He found us. And He considered us worth the cost of everything He gave on the cross.
This truth is central to the artwork. The pearl represents the value Christ places on believers, not because of anything we have earned, but because of who He is. It is painted realistically to reflect the weight and reality of that truth. The surrounding chaos speaks to the brokenness of the world, yet the pearl remains unchanged—held, chosen, and secure.
Found reflects the moment of realizing that our worth is not something we strive for or uncover on our own. It is something already declared by Christ through His sacrifice. We are not overlooked or accidental—we are seen, sought, and found.
