This quilted wall hanging is constructed using Japanese cotton fabric and cotton wadding. The Japanese cotton fabrics were carefully selected for their richness of color and surface detail. The finished piece measures 37.5” × 37.5”. It features a bright star in the central block, created with yellow fabric combined with golden thread–patterned fabric on a blue background.
Clusters of red grapes surround the central block along a continuous vine. Each grape was created using needle-turned appliqué and machine quilting to achieve a three-dimensional effect, emphasising the tactile quality of the work. The leaves were needle-turned appliqué, with hand stitching used to define the leaf veins. Flowers and birds were also created using needle-turned appliqué and are placed along the grapevine.
The background fabric was free-motion machine quilted. A combination of needle-turned appliqué, hand stitching, and free-motion machine quilting was used to bring depth, texture, and movement to the work. This quilted wall hanging is finished with light green binding.
“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” Psalm 16:11 (NKJV)
This piece explores the truth that the fullness of joy is found only in the presence of God. It invites viewers to reflect on their daily spiritual journey with the Lord and reminds God’s people of His everlasting blessings and the spiritual delights experienced when He is placed at the center of our lives. The yellow star at the centre represents Jesus Christ, the Bright and Morning Star (Revelation 22:16 : “I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star”), who makes His face shine upon His people (Number 6:25).
The courtyard-style layout, with the central block, represents placing Him at the centre of our lives. Living in God’s presence and having an intimate relationship with Him lead us to experience the fullness - a satisfying abundance of joy. I’m picturing a sense of satisfying abundance from Numbers 13:23: “Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole.” This abundance is represented by the large clusters of grapes on the vines, which—together with the flowers and birds—symbolise fullness of joy.
The free-motion quilting pattern in the background represents the path of life that God guides His people to follow, and the bright green binding represents the new life Jesus came to give—life more abundantly (John 10:10).
As a wall hanging, this quilt reminds us to live in God’s presence, here and now.
