Artist Statement

My goal was to reimagining the narrative of Genesis 1 in a way that underscores a singular, divine Creator behind the vastness of existence. While I’ve explored this theme through various media, I chose acrylics for this piece to capture the vibrancy of life.

The composition ascends from the bottom up, mirroring the chronological unfolding of creation. At the base, I’ve integrated the Big Bang into Day 1, reflecting my belief that faith and science are not at odds, but rather two languages describing the same miracle. As the eye moves upward, the waters divide (Day 2), lush flora emerges (Day 3), and the celestial bodies—including our fellow planets—fill the heavens (Day 4).

Following the multiplication of life in the seas and skies (Day 5), the canvas teems with the animal kingdom (Day 6). At the heart of the Garden, Adam and Eve stand as pure spirits, captured in the moment before the fall. Finally, Day 7 culminates in a radiant central light—a reminder that God is the prism from which all color and life originate. For me, this painting is a vibrant 'thank you' for the detail and beauty I get to witness every day as an artist.

How it fits into contest

For many, Genesis 1 feels like a poetic mystery that struggles to sit alongside modern science. Yet, as I meditated on the opening line— “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” —I realized it isn't just a story; it is a profound architectural blueprint. In the original Hebrew, this verse encompasses the simultaneous origin of time, space, and matter. My painting, "The Ascent of Creation," translates this narrative into a vertical visual journey. I chose acrylics for their boldness, starting at the base with a "Big Bang." To me, the "Let there be light" of Day 1 mirrors the scientific singularity—the moment energy exploded into the void. The composition ascends through the "forming" of the world: the separation of sky and sea on Day 2, and the emergence of dry land and flora on Day 3. It then transitions into the "filling" of those spaces. On Day 4, the stars and planets appear, signifying that the universe is vast and orderly. Day 5 and Day 6 teem with life, from the multiplication of birds and fish to the complexity of the animal kingdom. At the heart of the sixth day, I depicted Adam and Eve as spirits. This represents humanity in the Garden before the fall—pure and connected to the Divine. Finally, at the pinnacle, Day 7 is represented by a radiant, white light. It is not an "empty" rest, but the source of all color and life, showing that everything comes from Him and eventually returns to Him. Everything reflects the character of a single Creator. As an artist, I believe science and Scripture are two different lenses looking at the same masterpiece. This painting is my "thank you" for the beauty found in every detail of His design.
