Artist Statement

I used to think that I needed extrinsic motivation to be creative. The so-called muse to inspire human imagination. However, the moment I stopped looking outward and focused inward, I awakened my divine desire. For me, this is a purposeful pursuit. From then on, I ceased the perpetual search for a worldly muse. Instead, I mused on the word, as all the inspiration I needed was within me. Inspiration appeared in my dreams and interludes in my mind.

I made a promise to tell the truth through my visual journaling. My painting process carries equal importance as the finished piece. In my uniquely organised style, I work through thoughts with fine lines to ground myself in the moment. I bring thoughts to life as I see, there is the light overcoming the darkness. The light arises over time and space. I traverse these changes in layers of crisscrossed brushstrokes in vivid colour and bold contrast.

This creative journey unfolds in my thoughts, by my actions, and on my canvases. My aim is to engage the viewer to consider a contemplative life. With all the content clutter of modern-day life, my art compels you to look within yourself for the answers to your everyday existence. It is a musing experience to find what you are looking for through self-reflection. For who in this world knows you better than yourself?

How it fits into contest

The inspiration for the acrylic painting entitled ‘Be Still’ comes from the scripture Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Be Still means to let go, to release the things, places, people, and mindsets that create fear and anxiety. It stands in contrast to the typical human responses in times of trouble, which are to either fight or take flight. It connotes its own movement, stillness, as one takes a divine path in the face of conflict, confusion, and challenges by acknowledging His presence and power. It is to focus on finding peace within and standing firm in faith.

Therefore, consider the choice to be still like drops of water on leaves with their reflected colours moving in harmony in the light. Watching water droplets on leaves can calm a chaotic mind and ease a troubled heart. The use of the leaves’ surface is intentional, as they are waxy with microscopic structures, making them water-repellent. Whether from rain or dew, on such surfaces, water beads up into rounded droplets. When the droplets eventually roll off, they pick up dirt and debris that are reminiscent of one’s concerns. The Creator designed the leaves’ surface to be self-cleaning. This aids their absorption of sunlight and diminishes the adhesion of what may harm their growth.
