Each piece I create is a Visual Reflection of my Life and Spiritual Journey, images I have seen in dreams or during quiet times of meditation and prayer. I distill these visions into a cohesive image that symbolizes the eternal and spiritual aspects of life; using abstract symbolism combined with earthly and cosmic elements. I constantly explore new ways of understanding the physical and metaphysical worlds; to evoke a deeper understanding and appreciation of life; and to see the inherent beauty of all people. Some of these pieces have inspired a Poetic Word that facilitates a deeper level of viewer interaction.
I use a variety of mediums, pure colors, pearlescent and metallic paints layered in a painterly fashion from translucent areas to thickly applied strokes. This textual layering on the canvas brings an internal depth of color, which changes with the light or particular point of view, and creates 3-dimensional visual effects that explode off of the 2-dimensional surface.
These pieces transport viewers into other dimensions of life and spirituality. Cosmic and earthly locations combine to celebrate the inner world and the physical places we inhabit.
The surreal environments and juxtaposed elements induce a thoughtful and curious approach to the images. Together they create an atmosphere that is conducive to introspective meditations while thrilling the eyes and soul. Poetic writings for select pieces further illuminate aspects of the vision to stir hearts and minds.
Acts 1:9-11. After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This Same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
Luke 21:25, 27-28 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
In my painting Jesus is no longer on the cross, but His body is twisted and the wounds He bore to redeem us from our fallen nature are still present. Wounds we can see and touch, the nail scarred hands and feet, the gaping wound from the centurion’s spear.
Jesus declares that all the world will see his return all at once, so I imagine Him coming down along the river, in my neighborhood. Looking up we see the clouds in the golden hour of sunset, and the upper atmosphere that protects the earth. We see the sign of his coming the Blood Red Moon, and beyond that the Milky Way.
Jesus promises that He will return at the appointed time. Until then we should do the work He has ordained for us, to watch, wait and be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.
