My work consists of various forms of mixed media. This piece was drawn and then painted on a 30" x 40" canvas using acrylic paint. Outlines for the hands and the dove were drawn with charcoal. The letters were later applied digitally. I had the design for this piece in my mind for months, but I never knew what to put in the space between the dove and the hands until about 6 months after its creation. The piece was untitled until the verse John 8:32 was put into my mind. The title of the piece now honors this verse and shows how scripture can be applied into artwork.
John 8:32 touches on how having knowledge and applying the truth to one's life leads to their freedom. They are set free from their sins as long as they abide by God's word and put forth the effort to do so. They are set free from death because death doesn't have a place for the spiritually faithful. The artwork shows this with a simple image: a set of hands releasing a white dove. The set of hands represents the sin and worldly things that was keeping the dove from taking flight. The dove represents someone who knows the truth and has applied it to their lives so they can be spiritually faithful. I chose a dove instead of a person because it represents the peace that comes with being set free. I also think having a dove makes the piece easier to relate to.
