Artist Statement

Motivated by my experiences as a medical doctor, PEACE, BE STILL situates a biblical moment within the quiet tension of a hospital waiting room. An environment surrounded by anxiety, urgency, grief, and uncertainty, where I often witnessed how fear and hope coexist. In this work, a single figure remains composed, embodying stillness amid unresolved outcomes. It explores peace as an interior posture even in the midst of crises. The surrounding figures continue to wait, worry, and move, while the central subject prays. This contrast reframes the scripture not as the silencing of external storms, but as the presence of faith within them. PEACE, BE STILL invites viewers to consider calm as an act of trust, and reflect on faith practiced not after answers arrive, but while they are still unknown.

How it fits into contest

Mark 4:39, “Peace, be still,” speaks to a moment where calm is spoken into chaos rather than doubting or waiting for it to end. In the emergency room, I experienced situations where fear, and uncertainty were constant, and solutions were neither promised nor immediate. This scripture reframed my understanding of peace, the verse speaks to the practice of remaining grounded in God’s presence amid disorder. The artwork reflects this interpretation by placing a composed figure in a space filled with anxiety and waiting. The surrounding activity continues, in the composition represents a lived response to the scripture—choosing inward calm and attentiveness to God in the midst of unresolved situations. By situating the verse within everyday life, the work reflects faith not as an abstract belief, but as a discipline embodied through patience, surrender, and presence.
