Artist bio

I teach art full time at a middle school in the Cincinnati area and love creating artwork in my free time. I work in a variety of mediums and techniques and feel this allows my skills to sharpen and better instruct my students. I primarily work in acrylic paints and prismacolor pencils, often combining mediums to achieve a desired effect. My artwork has been published in books and calendars and I have been awarded prizes in numerous design contests, most recently the winner of the Summerfair poster contest in Cincinnati, OH. (a premier arts festival in the US.) I have commissioned works on display in area businesses and have also contributed to many public art displays. Recently, I have been compelled to create more scripture-inspired pieces and spend much more creative time in the Word. My hope is that my art will draw in the casual observer, captivate their interests, and invite them to come away with the sense of God as a purely approachable and meaningful experience.

Artist Statement

I admire all forms of visual art, yet have never been able to master the fine art of pottery. Much as I try, the skill set eludes me. I am reminded, however, that God is our potter, and creates us all individually with unique purpose and gifts. This painting explores the biblical metaphor of the potter and the clay with the various vessels formed, shaped and crafted by the hands of our Creator. Though distinct in size, color, and structure, each form bears the mark of intentional craftsmanship, emphasizing both individuality and belonging. Each vessel is a unique shape although fits nicely in the collection as a whole. Imperfect contours and asymmetry are not flaws but evidence of the desire for individuality from a Creator who values the process of discovery. Earthy reds, ochres, and browns evoke the raw material of clay, echoing humanity’s origin. Light emerges from between the vessels, reinforcing the idea of divine origin. Together, the vessels stand as a visual testimony to Ephesians 2:10, each created purposefully, prepared for good works, and shaped to carry what God intends.

How it fits into contest

Isaiah 64:8: "Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand"

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

It is my hope that those who connect with my painting can walk away with a sense of belonging and be inspired to explore the divine plan God intends for them.
