Kimberly J.B. Smith is a mixed media artist, mother of two grown children, and is married to a writer. Creativity is intermingled into daily discussions. It’s a wonderful life, this creative living thing, and Smith highly recommends it.
In addition to family connections, Smith is a lifelong teacher of art to ages 3 to adult. Along the way, Smith believes she has and can learn something from each person she encounters and from every encounter. Her 10,000 hours of artistic immersion come from years of practice as well as time developing content and methods in the classroom and her academic studies.
Her inspiration for materials comes from her childhood visits to her grandfather’s house of treasures. That environment sparked an appreciation for the high and low end of aesthetics. Smith’s process involves collecting all manner of raw materials from beaded purses to bones, jewelry bits and jar lids, bells and shells, metal discards and any items with something unique about them. From these collections, Smith curates the potential treasures for inclusion in a theme, an idea, a raw vision. These items work together to tell the story. Finishing touches in paint and varnish reveal the piece. Smith’s final product is always a bit of a surprise.
Inspirations are too many to list in total. God is her ultimate inspiration. Smith hopes to inspire others through her work as a Christian artist.
The artist makes her home in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.
The Veil
2 Corinthians 3:18
18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4
3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,
4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
As a young girl, I had an experience of seeing a wall and considering what was beyond. Here, I attempt to depict an image of what is beyond the veil - revealed to Christian believers.
Below is a decaying village under a red sky. A vision of hope rises up. Above is such brightness that we cannot imagine.
I reach beyond to my savior for this one!
