Artist Statement

‘Ecce Homo’ (2025) by Marcus Stilianos.

Ecce Homo (Latin for "Behold the Man") is the phrase Pontius Pilate used when presenting a scourged, crowned with thorns, and bound Jesus to a hostile crowd before his crucifixion, as described in John 19:5. This pivotal moment is a famous theme in Western Christian art, depicting Jesus' suffering and humility contrasted with Roman power, often showing Pilate gesturing to the battered Jesus, symbolizing his condemnation despite perceived innocence, leading to the cry for crucifixion.

This 2025 artwork is a contemporary interpretation created as an homage and in honor of all of the great artists who have come before and represented ‘Ecce Homo’ in the history of Christian Art.

How it fits into contest

[John 19:5]
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

I have always loved the visual aspect of scripture, bringing it to life through captivating and striking artworks. That is what I have tried to do with this scripture. That it may captivate and inspire a new and next generation. Reimagining old scripture in new light.
