Artist bio

Life leaves marks. As an expressionist, I paint with light, form, and color to interpret snapshots of the human condition. In each piece, light and shadow mark the mood, while form shapes the context. Color expresses the intrinsic mark, or feeling, as it relates to the subject. I want my work to challenge viewers to see beyond the painted marks, to the unique story they reveal to each of us. N/A

Title

Battle Won

Artist Statement

Battle Won was created to symbolize the relation and dependence of man’s spiritual battle with the ultimate battle in which the victor was decided on the cross. The cross is embedded with the armor of God, red with Christ’s blood, and stands as a beacon of hope between the heavenly realm and the lake of fire. While the armor represents man’s struggle with evil, the crown of thorns and the nails remind us that we do not fight alone and Christ has already won.

How it fits into contest

This piece is a symbolic representation of the accoutrements of battle as described in Ephesians 6:10-20. The helmet of salvation rests above the breastplate of righteousness. These elements represent our authority as children of the the King. The shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, set together as the tools used both to attack and defend against evil. Finally, the belt of truth and the shoes, representing the gospel of peace, are depicted as the Lord directs our path in this battle.

As I began designing this piece, I was inspired to acknowledge the kingdom authority of Christ by placing the crown of thorns and nails on the cross itself. It is by His sacrifice that the final battle is won.
