Artist Statement

My artwork is a special dedication to my mom. It's a piece symbolizing appreciation and how full my heart is to have her into my life. It's not just a dedication to my mom but also all the strong powerful women of God that came before us with prayer in the times of grief and distress due to the loss of a husband and a father. It's about a time and moment in mourning and salvation. It's
a dedicated to those that know the process of healing and who it comes from, those that even at the worst moments know where their hope comes from and who to turn to. I can only hope that we all have those people in our lives, those that will believe for you when it's hard to believe for yourself.

How it fits into contest

Like I've mentioned, this piece is dedicated to my mother. Mother of hope, mother of love, mother of 3, most of all the most praying woman I know. Ephesians 6:10-20 is perhaps the clearest definition of the spiritual war which we find from the pen of the Apostle Paul. It not only assures us that there is a spiritual war, but it warns us that apart from utilizing the weapons which God has provided for us, we are hopelessly underpowered. This passage informs us as to what our divinely weapons are. Beyond this, these weapons imply the nature of the struggle which we are in. The weapons which God has provided for us are those weapons which best repel the attacks of Satan, and thus we can learn a great deal about the nature of Satan’s opposition from simply considering each of the weapons at our disposal.
3 months ago I lost my father due to natural causes, it was this time that we had to look deep into each one of our souls as a family and stay firm in prayer than ever before. When we were questioning what had happened, questioning God, questioning our existence, and questioning everything we knew and had been taught, it was and still is our mother's prayers that pulled us off the pit to remind us what have been and what we had before us. While we wept, my mother continued trailing in prayer each day and night. She understood this because she travailed in childbirth. Going back to when Jesus travailed at Gethsemane interceding and agonizing for the whole creation. He prayed, "Not my will, but thou will be done" . A mother must persist, she must keep up the good fight, She must labor until the child is brought into this world. In the very same way, a mother can labor for her child spiritually. She can persist in prayer and never let up until her child is released from the clutches of the enemy and darkness, until her child receives God's grace to be lifted from the miry pit he or she has dug for himself or herself through sinful choices or life's unexpected turns.
When we go through grief, a dark hole comes towards us because the devil will have plans to tempt us, to confuse us, to lie to us, to "kill, steal and destroy" God's plan for our lives when we are at our weakest. Parents must resist the enemy for their children until they are able to maturely in spiritual warfare fight for themselves. Zephaniah 1:7 reads “Be silent in the presence of the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is at hand”. In Zephaniah 1:15, the prophet is giving a warning that troubled times are coming, he describes it as "trouble and distress”, “devastation and desolation”, "darkness and gloominess”, and “clouds and thick darkness”. This reminds us of the paradox that we need to be silent before God and seek Him, because we go through seasons of times that will be filled with greater stress. This verse in Zephaniah reminds me of Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God...”. When Samuel heard God’s voice, his response was “Speak, for Your servant hears”, 1 Samuel 3:10. It is through listening that we can know God’s heart for us. We as the children of God should put on the full armor of God because we don't only fight against flesh and blood but against the darkness(evil) in the spiritual world, Ephesians 6:10-20 gives us a tool that we should always put on the shield of God, our tool being the holy spirit which needs us to be firm and believe without a doubt that the Lord will protect and if it's not by His will it will not be done. James 4:7 also goes along to tell us about being humble before God. My mother raised me to be a humble and strong young woman in the presence of the Lord. There is no doubt that she knew 3 months ago that there was a better tomorrow for me through believing in Christ and his doings. She raised me from Proverbs 22:6 "train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it", following that she made sure throughout my life that I knew Matthew 6:9-13 "Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil...", for I know today through any battles against the spirit that the Lord remains a good father for the lost and found and the fatherless. Through this art piece I know that "He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children" Psalm 113:9, and 1 Corinthians 11:10 "For this reason, and because the angels are watching, a woman should wear a covering on her head to show she is under authority". I know through my spiritual warfare that "The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent", Exodus 14:10-14, for when I was down and below I listened because my mother reminded me of who to listen to. Through prayer we were raised and our burdens were lifted from our shoulders through Christ. Moses told the people, "Fear not; stand still (firm, confident, undismayed) and see the salvation of the Lord which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians you have seen today you shall never see again."
It is apparent from the Ephesians 6:10-20 above that the spiritual warfare can only be fought by man with success through God, and such we cannot be victors by our own strength. The Devil is a powerful spiritual being, and in order for one to be a strong opponent one has to fight the Devil in spirit mode powered by God. In order for a person not to fight a loosing battle, we are told through the scripture that one needs to obtain salvation, study and meditate day and night and pray without ceasing in truth and in faith. The same be said about a praying parent. God doesn't like sin, and each time the Israelites disobeyed God, He would forsake them and not be among them to fight and defend the people in physical battles with other nations. God is a righteous, faithful God and a praying parent must adopt the nature of God, and pray in spirit and truth for we do not know how we aught to pray but the spirit intercedes on our behalf with groans that cannot be uttered.
