Artist Statement

My pastel painting portrays the cosmic battle between the forces of good and evil. The multitudes of heavenly hosts fighting over the dominion of the human soul and the ongoing spiritual warfare. I purposely chose a woman to represent humanity. For we are not reliant upon our own strength but upon God's. She stands faithful and steady, dressed in the armor of God, she lets Him do the fighting for her. She holds upward and outward her weapon, the Bible, the Holy Word of God. The mighty Sword of the Spirit, living and powerful goes forth to conquer the enemy.

How it fits into contest

I chose to dress a frail human in the armor of God to demonstrate Ephesians 6:10 "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might." In our human weekness He is strongest. Ephesians 6:11 She is strong because God fights for her as she has obediently put on all of His armor. This Christian soldier is dressed in the whole armor of God and though she is being attacked from every direction from the devil she stands unharmed. Ephesians 6:12 I chose to use the universe and and beyond to demonstrate the struggle and fight between the spiritual powers of heaven and hell throughout the ages. Here the fight over authority and influence over mankind takes place between the armies of heavenly hosts. I incorporated light and dark, falling stars representing the fallen angels, Lucifer in the upper right hand corner his head and upper body silhouetted, his head absent of light. There are holes in the heavens that are black and void of light, places of evil principalities. There are vibrant colors representing the life and death of creation. There are flashes of lightning as fighting takes place. There are veins and heartbeats, swarms of demons and angels with hundreds of tiny marks swirling throughout the galaxy showing the real battle at hand. In Ephesians 6:13 I painted the soldier standing in her armor, straight and firmly rooted unafraid. Ephesians 6:14 The soldier wears the belt of truth that I painted on her as she is, the truth, she is thick in the waistline. This belt of truth protects all her fragile and feminine organs. She is pure and truthful. She wears the breastplate of the righteousness of Christ, it is tinted blood colored around her chest and shoulders. She is protected by his sacrifice. Ephesians 6:15 Her feet are dressed with the preparation of the gospel of peace shown by the readiness of the winged dove spirits quaking with lightning coming out of them. They have the power to make tremble the earth with the gospel. You can see they are ready to take off with great speed. You will notice that her foot gear comes up over her knees protecting them as well with a spirit filled protection as she prays on her knees for the saints frequently. Ephesians 6:16 In her left hand is the shield of faith. It is purposely held poised downward. She is relaxed, trusting in God's protection. She has great faith in Him, so she leaves her head exposed knowing God will save her from every attack of the enemy. Ephesians 6:17 On her head rests the helmet of salvation and it was placed upon her by Christ. You can see on the top of the helmet it is adorned with a star in the shape of a cross right above her head protecting her. The great and mighty sword of the Spirit, the word of God is held in her right hand. Her open bible and hand become one with the sword's handle and the living flame that bursts forth from the Word of God. This mighty weapon goes out into the universe to defeat the adversary. Its fire and fury represent the wrath of God against his enemies. Ephesians 6:18 She perseveres in prayer and in her faithful fight. She watches the scene before her, and though it is terrifying, she remains still in prayerful trust in God. Ephesians 6:19 She now represents me as I will go forth to boldly share this work of Ephesians and the gospel of Christ. Ephesians 6:20 I have titled this work "Ambassador of the Word" For that is which I have become.
Thank you for this opportunity of spiritual growth that has been tremendous for me.
