Linda Mahe

Artist bio

Linda has been painting on and off all her life, as child-rearing and work permitted, starting at Claremont School of Art and now devotes much of her time to it. Until now, however, her work has rarely been viewed by the public. She spent her professional career as a counsellor working initially in the cancer field, and more recently in women’s drug and alcohol dependence. She has a Master’s degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Many of her recent works are inspired by the experiences and emotions of the women whom she counselled. She took in their desperation and despair, their hopes and fears, their successes and failures, their incarcerations and their freedoms, their highs and lows. These raw emotions, empowered by the experiences of her clients, are embodied in her art. She portrays their deepest emotions with a rare clarity. As a viewer, one can almost feel the raw pain and suffering, and at times the joy of being released from the pain, of these women. Other works are more whimsical, of children and of life. Linda’s favoured medium is acrylic on linen.

Artist Statement

‘THE PRAYER’
The painting depicts a young woman praying fervently.
It may be that she is Ukraine, as the color thematics of blue and gold suggest, praying for peace in her homeland. She prays that God may provide strength and fervour for her countrymen to stand firm in the fight for their nation, under attack from dark forces of oppression.

How it fits into contest

Topic relevance to Ephesians 6:10-20

The scripture reads “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests”. This Christian woman is deep in prayer, asking God to bring peace in her homeland of Ukraine.

Scripture: “…our struggle is not against the flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil…”. The struggle in her case is against the Russian ruler and authorities who have brought on this war against Ukraine, representing the forces of evil.

Scripture: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” There is little more she and her countrymen can do other than pray and stand firm and hold their ground, for they are vastly outnumbered in terms of physical might on the battlefield.
