Artist Statement

My collages incorporate allusions to the universal symbol of women as they appear in art history and mythology interpreted and placed in a contemporary context. I reinterpret mythical spirituality and meaning by exploring the relationship of female imagery to natural and anthropomorphic forms.

How it fits into contest

My artwork is a metaphorical reference to the passages from Ephesians 6:10-20, " .... when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth...righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes with the gospel of peace" My image depicts the aftermath of that struggle, hence the title, "Ascension" in which my androgynous warrior cloaked as an angel stands firmly and victoriously facing upwards after having confronted evil. He/she triumphantly rises upward out of the darkness toward the heavens. The little white mouse with the leafy vegetation represent earthly connections; the protection of the meek by the angel/warrior/savior against evil on earth.
It was my intention to create a mysterious thought-provoking image of the spiritual message from Ephesians without making a literal depiction of it so that the interpretation of the artwork can be open to a wide range of viewers.
