Artist bio

For me, art is about being in awe of God, who He is, and His creation. My art is an expression of what He is done and is doing in my life. I spend hours outside each day, in snow, rain, or sun, as that is where I find my inspiration and really feel connected to God. I love to work in different art mediums, including oils, water colour, pencil, acrylic, and wood burning. The verses I am committing to memory right now are Philippians 4:4-7.

Artist Statement

I created this 30 by 40-inch oil painting in the midst of my struggle with insomnia and anxiety in the night. I would picture Jesus and His angels watching over me and that continually offered me a sense of peace that transcended what I could even begin to understand. Knowing that God was and is right with me in the darkest and most uncertain moments of my life provides me with the strength and assurance that I can trust Him no matter what. The little girl in the drawing symbolizes how having trust and humility like a child can bring you closer to God. The two angels around the girl show how God is with you even at night and when you do not feel He is there. The mountains in the background are a sure reminder that God is greater than anything we will ever face. If He created the mountains and can move them, why would He not take care of us? How amazing is it that God loves each person in a special but same way and yet He created the universe! The reflection in the window, which shows the angels from another point of view, was inspired by Jan Van Eyck's piece "The Arnolfini Portrait" with the mirror in the background which provided depth to his oil piece. The red cardinal in the window provides yet another small reminder of God's love for us.

How it fits into contest

The Spiritual Battle is about the battle for keeping our souls in tune with God's Holy Spirit and not letting the devil get us distracted or torn away from God. In my art piece, I display how God is with us when we turn to Him and offer our hearts to Him. The little girl, afraid of the dark and full of fear, prayed with her mother for peace - the mother is viewed in the reflection on the window looking into the room. This battle for God's peace that the devil so clearly did not want her to have, was no match for the armour of God and the power of God's Holy Spirit. In John 16:33, it says, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." This verse closely connects to the great gift God has given us, that if we come to Him with humble and true hearts with a spirit that is willing to let God fight for us if we ask Him, He will give us true peace no matter what we face!
