Artist Statement

This original linocut block print depicts the moment of annunciation when Mary hears she will be the mother of the long awaited Messiah. The title of this piece comes from the poem by Madeleine L'Engle:,

After Annunciation
"This is the irrational season
when love blooms bright and wild.
Had Mary been filled with reason
there’d have been no room for the child."

The sunrise at the top of the piece alludes to Isaiah 60 -- "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you." The Lily of the Valley on the sides of the border symbolize humility and the coming resurrection of Christ. The rose at the bottom represents purity and grace.

I created this piece to celebrate and recognize the wonder and humility of Mary's obedience and acceptance of the Holy Spirit's hidden work. It is a visual reminder of God's grace to work in and through us in the most beautiful and irrational ways.

How it fits into contest

To me, this piece perfectly sums up what it means to be strong in the Lord's mighty power. It is not through our own strength, power, intellect or accomplishments that we stand firm against spiritual forces of evil. It is through our seemingly irrational faith in God's grace and our humble obedience to His calling on our lives. God chose Mary, a simple, humble girl, to to bear the savior of the world. God also invites each of us to subvert the forces of evil in this world by faith in God's mighty power and and echo Mary's words: May it be done to me according to your word.
