The title of this painting is Women in The Word. It is my interpretation of a woman in a church, standing next to a picture, a stained glass window that portrays images of stories from the bible where women overcame obstacles and warfare to be obedient and honor God. It is the first painting from a series about women in the bible that I am creating. As well as presenting artwork my desire is for the pieces to be used to encourage conversations about the bible stories and lead to bible studies that will explore the life and testimony of the women portrayed. The woman reading the bible represents a modern-day woman, learning the truth about her history from these stories and finding a true understanding of what she is capable of being; a woman used by God that can change the world. It is about making the connection that God wants to work in our lives the same way he worked in the lives of women in the past. We have to be obedient and spiritually prepared which requires putting on the whole armor of God.

In the text Ephesians 6:10-20 verse 17b says, “And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. My focus in this painting is obedience to studying the Word of God. In this painting, we have women that God chose to fight spiritual battles that changed situations, perspectives and the world. You cannot win a spiritual battle without being obedient to what God has spoken to you or to God’s written word. When dealing with spiritual battles, it is empowering to know the stories that show how God delivered His children in the past. All the women in this painting can be used as examples of putting on the armor of God for a spiritual battle. They all had to in different ways. I wanted to provide a variety of situations, that gave a different perspective of a spiritual battle and how they prevailed. All of these lessons a modern-day woman can learn if she studies the bible, as the woman at church in this painting. They will know how to walk in obedience and fight spiritual battles using, “The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
