Artist Statement

The artwork "Communion" was done with graphite on paper, during a month and a half.

The first step in the process is being receptive to the imagery that comes to mind. The idea that appears in my mind is the one I try to reach once I start sketching; through the days I stay aware of my surroundings for elements that can be included, and I believe those elements manifest for me to continue the artwork.

I show God in all his glory, powerful, wise, serene, from his chest emerges a beam of light that illuminates the whole scene, creating a rare phenomena provoked by the sun at low temperatures called 'parhelio' which originates a halo around it and the illusion of two more suns, which in consequence generates a cross of light. He is represented with his face covered because none of us knows his face, and I wanted to maintain that fact. With arms open accepting his son, and offering all his infinite energy, protection, love, and wisdom.
I drew the clouds around them from observing, understanding, and from memory. During the period of producing this piece I came across a sky full of pigeons and swallows, and decided to include it along with a view from my hometown, that shows a volcano called Xinantecatl, which I can see from my home everyday. The son of god is in a state of enlightenment, and full communion with his father; trusting him completely and unconditionally. To the extent that their navels have the exact same location, or they would be, if God has one.
There's also some stars above and at a side of God, and two of them which are brighter represent his eyes observing the whole of space and time.

My work has been recognized for spiritual topics and a strong usage of luminosity to understand ourselves and our souls on a deeper level. This piece is not the exception.

How it fits into contest

It shows a complete faith in god, accepting his light, wisdom, and love entirely.
Focusing into specific fragments, I was inspired from Psalm 91:1-6, especially on verse 4. Because it gave me more clarity on the initial idea/vision.
1"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday."

Ephesians 6:10-11 :
10" Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes." Representing the armor of god as his light.
Letting his power manifest through us and fully protect us. Surrendering yourself to god, with arms open embracing his infinite energy, and becoming One.
