As we stand in this moment there is a spiritual battle waging not only within ourselves, but around the world. We rush about our distracted lives while being bombarded by enticements and deceptive messages. If we’re not careful, these thoughts can influence our actions - or inaction. Such was the case with this contest entry. It took me 2 years of lurking to get enough courage to take proceed and when I did, I was fraught with doubt. I realized how much I struggle with the noisy lies from the enemy and in this same moment in time, people around the world were also in the midst of their own spiritual battles. As we stand, “flaming arrows” from the enemy are shot at us constantly. (v.16) Thankfully we have “the armor of God” that we can choose to use to extinguish them. (v.11-19.) The pieces of armor are a metaphor for the tools that we can use to withstand the attack. The central motif illustrates this with seven rings that are linked together: truth, righteousness, gospel of peace, shield of faith, salvation, spirit, and prayer. To withstand this battle, we need to continually renew our hearts and minds. He is our master compass and where we need to abide. We give thanks to Jesus, who without his sacrifice, we would be eternally without hope. When we stand with God and “boldly proclaim the mystery of the gospel” (v. 19) we shine brightly to those around us looking for hope in a dark world.

This 24x24 digital collage illustrates the spiritual battle as described in Ephesians 6:10-20. Verse 10 tells where we need to stand: “…be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” At any given moment in our life, we can choose to stand in His truth, or in the darkness of the world. Verse 11 tells us to “put on the armor of God.” This is God’s armor, not ours. We can not win this battle in our own strength. The central motif of bright white light is the moment that we use these tools to stand protected “against the schemes of the devil”. (v.11) Verses 12-13 explain that this battle is “not against flesh and blood” and is against “the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” The writing in the background and the static noise represent the battle that is waged in our minds, which could potentially lead to sinful actions. The “whole armor of God” as described in verses 13-19 is illustrated by seven rings held together by linked chains. These tools are effective when used together: truth, righteousness, gospel of peace, shield of faith, salvation, spirit, and prayer. They help us “to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Verse 13) Strengthened, we can “spread the gospel of peace” around the world. (v.15) The countries of the world are shrouded in darkness, and yet there are tiny spots of light from those sharing the Good News. The “flaming arrows of the evil one” are quickly reflected and extinguished by the power of God. (v. 16) The rings and chains also symbolize the author Paul who is in jail physically held in “chains,” asking us “pray at all times in the Spirit.” (v.18-20) This call was for his day - and ours. By spreading the “mystery of the gospel” (V.19) darkness diminishes as we stand and move to our next step.
