Artist bio

Rodney L. Coleman, Sr. paints with a passion. He can sit in front of his canvas and paint for hours at a time. Rodney’s intensity for the art that he creates is exemplified on each canvas that he touches. The memory of his first drawing is when he was 9 or 10-years old where he looked at a cartoon character and drew exactly what he saw. Rodney would tell anyone that no matter what you choose to do in life, you must get yourself prepared in order to be the best at your desired choice. A native-born Floridian, Rodney obtained an associates of art degree from Broward Community College. He then attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee where he was working towards a degree in Art Education. However, his plans were diverted, and he returned home where he served his community as a Fire Fighter for 30 years. He proudly retired in 2008 and picked up his paint brush full-time. Rodney is the CEO of Joyous Creations by Rod, LLC. He has been painting for more than 40 years and has a repertoire of his work displayed throughout his home-based business.

Artist Statement

This piece of work has been one of my favorites. I think it relates to the times that we are living in now. I reread the scripture just about every time that I sat down to paint. The way in which this art fits is the fact that all of my artwork has a message behind it.

How it fits into contest

While I was creating it, I thought a lot about the things that are going on in the world today. While paining this particular piece, I reflected on how we must be equipped to live and fight the battles that are forced upon us. Each day, before going out into the world, we must put on clothing to cover our nakedness. In the same way, before going out into the world, God has instructed us to put on the armor that He has prepared for us.

Credits

I give credit to my pastor. Pastor Michael K. Anderson has been pouring the word of God into me for over 15 years. I also give credit to my wife, Jacqueline Coleman for her constructive critiques and her thought provoking questions.
