Artist Statement

As an abstract artist, I have developed a specific technique. I manipulate acrylic paint on canvas, with a glazing and sanding method using contrasting colors and different surface textures to create my work. Through this technique I create a chaotic but controlled atmosphere of dreams, and memories. My Mind's Shield, is an abstract portrait of myself within my atmospheric style of painting.

How it fits into contest

My Mind's Shield, is a painting that represents my personal struggles that I face when battling with the unknown. My self-consciousness and deep insecurities are an everyday battle. When I read about the Armor of God, I find the strength deep within myself and the faith I have in God. He is the Divine Warrior that stands beside me good or bad. This piece is a journey of self-expression and inner healing. I find myself lost in the work through the process of escapism. The pleasure, conflict, and fear of what I discover about myself fuels me to evolve. I must discover more. I see the work as a window into nothing and everything. I am able to destroy the work and still make it precious. But above all else, the work must reveal the beauty and darkness of the soul. When the world is asleep and the streets are quiet, I am free to create. God is my shield and inner strength to forge ahead in this battle.
