Artist Statement

My mission is to “declare the glory of God”, according to Psalms 19:1, by creating art that reveals the earth’s stories through the use of color, shape, and line. At the same time I am committed to plant seeds of hope throughout the world by donating a portion of each purchase towards an adoption and foster care ministry.

I currently live with my husband and four children in a rural Mississippi suburb of Memphis where I am a homeschool mom and art tutor for all ages. Even though my art is secondary to my current roles, creativity is woven into every part of my day. I have been honored to do several pieces for large productions, fundraisers, and significant gifts. I see each piece as an act of worship to the ultimate artist and creator, God.

How it fits into contest

This mixed media painting(watercolor, pencil, and colored pencil on paper) tells a story that reflects our own spiritual lives….

The evidence of storms, past and present, are all around the tree. We can see big trees that have been uprooted or knocked over because of these storms. But there is a tree that is standing strong and firm. Why is this? How is this tree still standing? It’s because its roots are anchored in good earth. During times of drought, its roots have strained deeper to find sources of refreshment. In times of winter, its foundation has stayed protected where preparations are being made. In the spring, the tree shares its bounty with birds, animals, and insects. It is a source of protection, provision, and rest.

As Christians, Ephesians 6 also directs us in how we can prepare and work to keep ourselves strong in the midst of life’s storms. God gives us everything we need to protect us and nurture us but we have to let the roots of our heart grow deep down into the Word of God (Ephesians 3), our most offensive weapon, and in His presence, our greatest source of nourishment.

But there is a second part, there is an audience watching and learning from the big oak tree. There is the present and future generations, the acorns that are an extension of the tree, and the audience, the tree line in the background, watching and learning from a distance. They see big giants come down but also seeing strong towers stand firm. This is the beauty of putting on the full armor of God and anchoring your roots in the Word of God and in Him.
