I really enjoy pieces that give the viewer a glimpse into the mind of the artist and the process at large. It has been a recent move in my own works, especially this one. There isn't one element that is 'complete'. Instead, everything feels loosely sketched and fluid. In the initial sketches of this piece, I left the rough circular and cylindrical shapes of the feet and toes visible. But, it looked too incomplete and on-edge. By solidifying the shapes into their proper foot form while leaving the line quality sketch-like I feel I created a work that is more comfortably teetering between unfinished and finished.
There are three visual elements in this work; the light, the dark, and the figure. I was particularly inspired by Ephesians 6:13, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." I took this both literally and symbolically. I depicted the Spiritual Battle as the light and the dark forms that stretch horizontally across the canvas. In the forefront is the mass of darkness which threatens to envelope the figure. Behind and underneath the figure, whose "feet [are] fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace" (Ephesians 6:16), is the light, or the Spirit. The light is offering him strength against the dark and breaking through its powers seen by the blobs of the light in the dark.
